How It Works

1

Item survey and packaging plan

We survey all fragile items to determine packaging requirements. Artwork over a certain size requires custom crating. Ceramics need individual wrapping. We prepare a specific packaging list before arrival so materials are pre-ordered.

2

Specialist packing day

Our team arrives with all materials and packs each item individually. We photograph items before packing for the condition record. Artwork goes into acid-free tissue then into double-walled boxes or crates.

3

Careful loading

Fragile items are loaded last and positioned away from shifting loads. We use padding between all items and strap boxes vertically so they cannot tip or slide during transit.

4

Delivery and condition check

At delivery, we unpack and position items as directed. A final condition check against the pre-move photos confirms everything has arrived intact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you move oil paintings and framed artwork safely in Madrid?

Yes. Framed artwork is packed in corner protectors, then wrapped in acid-free tissue and bubble wrap, then placed in a double-walled picture box or custom wooden crate depending on value and size. We transport artwork vertically (never flat) and ensure it cannot shift during transit. For very high-value pieces, we recommend specialist art transport insurance which we can help arrange.

How do you handle antique furniture during a Madrid move?

Antique furniture is wrapped in thick padded blankets, with edge protectors on all corners. We never use standard plastic wrap against painted or veneered surfaces — the adhesive can damage finishes. Marble tops are removed and transported separately. We work slowly and methodically on antique items, which is reflected in the quote.

Do you move wine collections?

Yes. Wine collections need to be transported horizontally (corks must stay moist) and at a stable temperature. We use insulated wine transport boxes and choose morning slots in summer to avoid peak ambient heat in the van. For large cellars, we can arrange refrigerated transport through a specialist partner. Contact us with the size of your collection and we'll advise on the best approach.

Is high-value item insurance included?

Our standard goods-in-transit insurance covers items up to €10,000 per claim. For individual items worth more than this, we recommend arranging additional specialist insurance before your move. We can provide a letter confirming item values for insurance purposes on request. Contact us at info@manwithavanmadrid.com with your item list if you need a valuation certificate.

Can you move a large sculpture or heavy antique through a narrow doorway?

This requires a pre-move survey of both the item dimensions and the doorway, corridor, and staircase dimensions. We have experience with tricky extraction — including removing hinges from doors and temporarily removing moulding — to get large items through tight spaces. We assess this at the survey stage and quote accordingly. We never attempt a move that risks damaging the item or the building.
