Moving to Madrid to study? Whether you're arriving from the UK, starting at UCM's Ciudad Universitaria campus, or heading to UC3M in Leganés, this guide covers everything you need to know about the moving logistics.
Madrid's Main Universities and Where Students Live
Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM)
Spain's largest university, with over 60,000 students. The main campus is in Ciudad Universitaria (Moncloa district) — purpose-built university halls and academic buildings in a park setting northwest of the city centre. Most students who don't live on campus choose flats in Moncloa-Argüelles, which is walkable to campus, or in Malasaña and Chamberí, which are one metro stop away.
Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM)
Located in Cantoblanco, 15 km north of the city centre. A suburban campus with its own halls. Students typically live on campus in first year, then move to flats in Tetuán, Fuencarral, or Chamartín for commuter access.
Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M)
Main campus in Getafe, with a significant presence in Leganés (engineering and technology faculties). Students choose Getafe, Leganés, and increasingly Carabanchel and Vallecas for affordable flat shares with M-40 access to campus.
Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC)
Multiple campuses: Fuenlabrada, Móstoles, Alcorcón, and Madrid's Vicálvaro. Students use the M-50 ring road and A-4/A-5 corridors. Popular residential areas include Alcorcón, Leganés, and Carabanchel.
Universidad de Alcalá (UAH)
Based in Alcalá de Henares (30 km east on the A-2). A stunning UNESCO Heritage campus. Many students live in Alcalá itself — affordable and culturally rich — or commute from Madrid Atocha by Cercanías train (35 minutes).
Student Neighbourhoods: What to Expect
Moncloa-Argüelles (UCM)
The quintessential Madrid student area. Pre-war and 1950s blocks, many without lifts, but characterful and central. Rents for shared flat rooms: €500–700/month. Key streets: Calle Arguelles, Calle Mártires de Alcalá, and the streets around Moncloa metro.
Malasaña
Popular with students and young professionals. Lively, café-dense, excellent nightlife. Buildings are pre-war — expect staircase carries. Slightly pricier than Argüelles: rooms €600–800/month.
Lavapiés
Most affordable of the central districts. International, bohemian character. No-lift buildings are the norm. Rooms from €450/month. ZBE zone — check your removal company's van compliance.
Leganés / Alcorcón / Getafe
Outer belt towns popular with URJC and UC3M students. Much more affordable: rooms from €300–450/month. Better building access (lifts more common). Less interesting socially but very practical.
When to Book Your Move
Madrid's universities start in mid-September. The first two weeks of September are extremely high-demand for man and van services across all student neighbourhoods. Our September calendar typically fills by mid-August.
Book in July. Seriously — the students who call us in late August often can't get the dates they need.
What to Bring (and What to Leave Behind)
Madrid student flats are typically furnished — beds, sofas, basic kitchen. You don't need to bring large furniture. What students usually move:
- Clothes (lots — Madrid has 4 proper seasons)
- Books and study materials
- Desktop computer or monitor
- Bedding, towels, and kitchen kit
- Desk lamp and personal items
- Bicycle (Madrid is increasingly bike-friendly)
A typical student room's worth of belongings fits in a transit van with one helper — 2 hours service, €120 fixed price for our standard student move package.
ZBE and Student Moves
If you're moving into Moncloa, Malasaña, Lavapiés, or any central Madrid district, you need a ZBE-compliant van. Don't book a cheap removal service that uses older diesel vans — they can't legally enter central Madrid and you'll end up with your belongings stuck at the zone boundary. All our vans are ZBE-compliant. This is not an optional extra — it's just how we operate.
Arriving from the UK
If you're moving from the UK to study in Madrid, our UK-to-Madrid student move service covers the full logistics: collection from your UK address, Bilbao–Portsmouth ferry (or Channel Tunnel route), and delivery to your student flat in Madrid. Post-Brexit, personal belongings for students moving to the EU are generally importable duty-free. We handle the customs documentation.
